Marshall Middle School-hosted camp will introduce girls to variety of sports
A Marshall woman said a lack of opportunities for her sports-loving daughter prompted her to hold a summer sports camp for girls.
The Just 4 Girls Sports Camp will take place June 27 to July 1 at Marshall Middle School in the North Allegheny School District, and will provide instruction in around 10 sports to girls entering grades two to seven.
Allison Vaupel, 42, said her daughter, Carlyn, 9, got tired of playing sports with boys and asked her mother to find a camp where she could try different sports with other girls.
“I searched and searched, (but) most camps focus on just one sport, (such as) softball at a college,” Vaupel said.
“(Our camp) is going to allow younger girls a chance to learn about all of the different sports that are offered in most school districts.”
The camp costs $150. Participants will be separated into two age groups and introduced to two sports each day.
Sports include softball, basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball, tennis, golf and field hockey. Vaupel said 15 girls have signed up so far.
